The world we are living today have survived various disasters and calamities in the past history. But not all of them were delivered by the Nature, the fact is we Mankind have brought some great disasters on ourselves. Here is a list of some Man made catastrophes which inflicted a large amount of damage on Mankind and even changed the lives of many people.
The Door to hell is a natural gas field in Derweze, Turkmenistan. In 1971 a drilling rig made by the Geologists measuring around 70 meters in diameter exposed a large methane gas reservoir. The geologists decide to burn it off fearing the environmental impact due to the release of Methane gas and unfortunately the gas is still burning today.

In 1940 residents of Love canal near Niagara falls began to experience strange seepage leak in their yards followed by a strange smell. Many people began to fall ill and even many women began to have miscarriages or give birth to babies with defects. Later it was discovered that 21,000 tons of toxic industrial waste was buried below the surface of the town by a company.
8) Al-Mishraq Fire

This happened in June 2003 in Al-mishraq which is a state run Sulfur plant near Mosul, Iraq. This fire burnt about a month releasing 21,000 tonnes of sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere. This affects people by causing respiratory problems and created acid rain which result in destruction of vegetation.
In March 28, 1979 Three Mile Island Nuclear reactor undergone a partial Melt down. Radiation from the reactor was released into the atmosphere which results in Livestock Deaths, Premature Deaths and Birth Defects to the new born infants.
The Kuwait Oil fires were caused by the Iraq Military during the Invasion of Kuwait. Saddam Haussein sent his men to blow up the Kuwait oil wells and they have set fire over 600 oil wells whihc continued to burn for 7 months. This fire have caused a catastrophic damage to the environment and humans.

Exxon Valdez Spill occured in Alaska on March 24 1989, when Exxon Valdez a oil tanker collided with the Bligh Reef. This causes the ship to spill 750,000 barrels of Crude oil and was considered as the most devastating oil spills in the history. This disturbs the marine ecosystem intensely and resulted in death of 250,000 sea birds, 300 harbor seals, 247 Bald eagles and 22 Mighty Orcas.

Aral sea was one of the Four largest lakes in the world formerly and today only 10% of the lake exists today. The Irrigation projects of the Soviet Union started shrinking the water body by 90 percent , the salt and sandstorms killed the plant life and created an negative impact around the lake.
3) Great Smog

In 1952 London was affected by a severe air pollution combined with cold weather to form a thick layer of smog around the city. The people of London burnt coal to withstand the weather and as a result the smoke combined with Sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and soot left London covered with black cloud of total darkness which killed over twelve thousand people.

In the night of December 2,1984 Union carbide Pesticide Plant in Bhopal began to leak Methyl Isocyanate gas into the atmosphere. The immediate effect of the Leak results in death of 15,000 people and more than 20,000 people from then have died due to the gas related illness.

This was the worst man made disaster of all time and it is said that the effect of this incident exists still today. In April 26th, 1986 Chernobyl plant in Ukranian Soviet Socialist republic had a major melt down which let the release of Radioactive material which is four times stronger than the one occurred in Hiroshima. Around 100,000 suffered from fatal cancers due to this incident and a study says that the area is not safe for any activity, including farming up to 200 years.
